Creating an Inspiring Workspace

I never work at my desk. Whether I'm journalling, doing homework or painting, I somehow always end up on my bed or on the floor. My desk was used solely for papers I didn't want to deal with or things that didn't have a place. But since GCSE year is fast approaching, I thought it was about time I got into good habits. So I decided to develop a space where I felt inspired and happy to create and work.

I've found I'm much more likely to actually paint or sketch if my tools are out. They're a lot more inviting if I see them there, waiting to be used.

The rather loud and unpleasant collapsing of my bookshelf at 3am meant my wall was left pretty bare. I went to my tumblr and printed out pictures that inspired me. These include screenshots of my favourite TV shows and movies as well as a few quotes. Although these might prove as a distraction when the school term comes back around, for now I think they make the space much more colourful and endearing.

I find it's really important to have lots of light, especially as it can get so gloomy in Winter. So I have some quirky lamps to keep my desk nice and bright. I think think the next step is to get a really comfortable office chair. That way I won't think of it as such a chore to actually do things at a desk.

That's my progress so far. Where do you work best? And how do you keep it inspiring?

  1. I definitely like having a desk because it gets me in the work mindset. My only trouble was my desk chair at the dorm last year was not comfortable so I didn't like being there! But making the desk look inviting helped me want to be there. Also I totally agree - if the tools are out, it makes me want to paint and draw.

  3. I work best at a desk too, maybe because it requires you to sit up straight and focus, but mine is usually a mess, and I just end up flitting from space to space. But yours looks so cool that it might inspire me to get mine together.

  4. this is already inspiring me! i should totally decorate my desk and use it as a place to be organized. sadly, it just carries a messy pile of things i probably don't need, which leads me to doing my work on my bed. then, i most likely fall asleep without finishing any work.
