PRINT MATTERS

As part of the International Fashion Showcase, Print Matters is an exhibition that explores the relationship between Korean designers and magazines. Inspired by the theme of this years International Fashion Showcase, Utopia, and the recent Print Revival among today's youth, the exhibit had a range of creative interpretations.

My favourite collection was by Han Kim. I asked him a few questions about his inspiration, and he mentioned a variety of sources including an article referencing two dear running across Golden Gate Bridge and the concept of Alice In Wonderland Syndrome. I also asked him about the magnificent embroidery featured in his pieces, which apparently took him and his team about four months to complete.

The playful use of colour and shape was fun and outgoing. These Korean designers looked to the possibilities of the future, rather than the comfort and classics of the past.

The concept of blurred gender lines in D-Antidote's pieces was interesting, especially the suit showed twice to mimic the Korean trend of wearing the same clothes if you're a couple.

I liked the subtle detail of the coffee beans in the back of Ahyoung Choi's pieces, referencing her quote, 'When I think about magazines, I smell coffee. Magical and reminicent. I used to sit in the window seat of the Starbucks at The Borders Bookshop, in front of Central St. Martins on Charing Cross Road with piles of fashion magazines on the table in front of me'.

In the 'Studio' section of the exhibition, layed below the clothes was a spread of the designers' portfolios, and it was so cool to see the process of their creations.

Although I saw it during the Press Day, the exhibition is now open to the public at the Korean Culture Centre until March 11th.
