Horst exhibition at the V&A

The other day I went to the Horst exhibition at the V&A. Horst was a photographer who had an incredibly diverse career and worked in many genres such as fashion & couture, surrealism and photographing film stars. I adored the exhibition, especially the monochrome layout of the rooms which matched the black and white photography so nicely. It began with his work for Condé Nast, and his stunning editorial captures of Haute couture in Paris .

Horst also did work in the Middle East in 1949 which I thought was a really interesting addition to the exhibition. Below is 'View of the ruins at the Palace of Persepolis, 1949.'

Although the majority of the work on display was in black and white, Horst experienced a revolution in the thirties when colour photography was invented. This transformed the industry. On display in one of the final rooms were huge numbers of colour prints of Vogue covers & shoots.

Another highlight was this video which was projected in the exhibition and played on repeat. Not only is it a great video, but the music fits in with the aesthetic so well.

There were also amazing pieces from the Surrealist movement, where he featured whimsical silhouettes and objects in his photographs.

Overall it was a fantastic exhibition. It's on until January so if you're in London I reccomend you check it out!

Current obsession: Mary Quant

Collage by me, photos from my tumblr

Upon one of my many internet searching sessions, I have recently become acquainted with the wonderful Mary Quant (not literally, we're not actually friends *yet*). This revolutionary designer is the woman we have to thank for the infamous miniskirt (and hotpants). She was a key player in the '60s mod and youth movements in fashion and is quite an icon. At the time, the miniskirt was a symbol of youth. It was daring yet innocent, and its' controversial reputation meant young people HAD to wear it.

Unfortunately, nowadays the miniskirt rep has completely changed. Now, if your skirt is super short it's seen as a sign of bad taste, maybe even sleezy. It's sad how the once young yet classy trend has become controversial in a very different way. I don't think it's the case for all miniskirts, and it's sort of the norm for most hem lines but the expectations have changed a lot. However, the innocent, '60s shift dresses have become my latest obsession. Expert tip: they work best with winged liner.

What do you think about the miniskirt? Sweet or bad taste?

Behind the scenes of Virgin Suicides with Anna McGrane

Yesterday, I was lucky enough to join the wonderful Anna McGrane on her latest shoot, inspired by The Virgin Suicides. The young and talented photographer kindly invited me to help with the creative process.  I captured some behind the scenes snaps and also got a few minutes to chat with Anna about her inspiration and future plans in photography.

Behind the scenes:

Here are my behind the scenes photos!

The photos are so beautiful and these are a few of my favourites.

Make sure you follow Anna on instagram (@a_mcgrane) to keep up with her work. Thanks again Anna!

p.s. You may have noticed Lexi Likes has had a makover! As much as I loved my old theme, there were lots of issues with images being cut off and mobile device viewing so it was time for a change. I tried to keep a touch of my old theme in the header but I like this a lot better. My favourite feature being the 'pin it' button that pops up when you hover over an image, so perfect for all you pinterest lovers! Do you like it? Let me know in a comment!

Statement shorts & Mallorca vlog

Hello! Unfortunately this is the last outfit post with Edie in it for this Summer! It was our last shoot in Mallorca but I love how the photos turned out. We shot in a street in the town where everything is so rustic and pretty.

Edie wears:

Top - Benetton
Shorts - Benetton
Shoes - Zara

Lexi wears:

T-shirt - LOFT
Shorts - Asos
Shoes - Next
Bandanna - Rokit

I also want to talk about my new favourite rings. This is my go-to combo now (I'm actually wearing them as I type). The purple stone one I found at Portobello market the other day. It's really mystical and totally reminds me of the ring in Howl's Moving Castle which keeps you safe. Ah the magical witchy vibes. The other I found in H&M in a set for £1 - bargain!

Finally, here is a vlog/montage of our trip to Mallorca. I spent ages editing it so I hope you like it! And make sure to subscribe to my youtube HERE to see my videos first!

Somersault vlog & performance footage

I am currently writing from sunny and beautiful Mallorca right next to a pool and some mountains with snoring family members all around. It ain't half bad. Today I want to share the second part of my Somersault festival content. I made a cute montage/vlog of our day and also have some footage of all the performances we saw. Watch below or click HERE.

I have been a fan of Misty Miller's music for a few years now, so seeing her perform live was amazing. I also loved seeing Shannon Saunders as I recently started listening to her and then she started popping up everywhere, including Jacksgap. I ended up talking to her after her set and she was so lovely. My final favourite was We Were Evergreen. I hadn't listened to them that much before but they were so enjoyable to watch perform. You would think, listening to them on recording, that most of it is produced but they actually use all of the instruments you hear and do the coolest tricks with sound machines.

It was such an amazing day and I definitely want to go next year. Have any of you been to festivals recently?
